Areas of Expertise

  • Toileting Difficulties

Constipation and related toileting difficulties are incredibly common in young children. Research demonstrates the most effective way to treat toileting difficulties is a combined medical (i.e., talking with your child’s pediatrician) and behavioral management approach. Dr. Fussner utilizes research-proven strategies to support families in toilet training, managing constipation, and reducing the frequency of urine and bowel movement accidents. This intervention is most appropriate for children over 2.5 years and their parent(s).

  • Feeding Challenges

It’s difficult for parents to know how to manage picky or selective eating. Dr. Fussner’s child-directed approach works collaboratively with families to increase the quantity and variety of foods children eat, increase independence at meal time, and decrease meal time stress. Dr. Fussner also supports children in coping with food allergies and sticking with special diets (e.g., gluten free). This intervention is most appropriate for children over 3 years and their parent(s).

  • Chronic or Persistent Pain

Pain or discomfort that lasts beyond three months is considered “chronic” or “persistent.” This does not mean pain will last forever; however, the approach to managing chronic pain is different compared to acute or shorter-lasting pain. When pain becomes disruptive to daily life and activities, additional support including working with a specialized psychologist is often indicated. Dr. Fussner completed a specialized fellowship in behavioral pain management and has over 8 years experience directing family workshops on comprehensive pain management. Psychology services targeting pain management address coping with chronic pain, reducing pain intensity and frequency, and improving functioning.

  • Adjustment and Anxiety

Life requires tremendous flexibility and adaptability- both of which can be challenging for children and adults, alike. Dr. Fussner works with individuals experiencing a variety of stressors and coaches them in learning specific strategies to cope with anxiety, increase flexibility, and build resilience.
